Ireland has been luck enough to have had some of the most amazing and outstanding women around. People might forget the importance of women in Irish culture. First you have the matriarch, the head of the family that not only held the family together but also kept it going. The would be the family accountant, control where and what was spent. Create the family savings and always make sure there was enough food on the table for all. I know the Ansbro family was never short of a matriarch, I recall my father telling me of one of my great great grand mothers who would always buy what land went up for sale around own land. This gave our a good supply of turf or fuel for the fires. The Storyteller, the women of a family always knew what was happening around the family. I recall my own grand mother used to be able to update us on everything that was happening around a family from England to Dublin to Mayo. She also could tell you what was happening around the village. These are just two qualities that come to mind. I have always been brought up thinking of the women of the household been the most important people in the family. They were the cement that kept the walls of family house together. Not always seen but then again how many people notice the cement in the brickwork of a house.

So in order to celebrate the women of Ireland I have gathered some of the stories either written or mention the powerful mothers, sisters and women of prison school.
